‘Up on the Downs at Bromyard Weekend’ – Brockhampton Saturday

The Brockhampton Estate

Or Quarry Calm, ‘More Sticks Than You Can Shake a Stick at’ and a Very Large Fox…

We sleep well and wake to wind and rain but are little disturbed by it down here in our quarry. The forty mile an hour gusts roar overhead but we just lie in warm darkness and drink tea…

Later we listen to the winds howl as we eat hot bacon rolls in bed by candlelight. We walk to the Brockhampton Estate and take a path through the woods to the medieval Manor House that lies in the valley. Out of the shelter of the quarry the wind is far more noticeable and we are warned of the danger from the trees. “We’ll run if we hear them creaking”, Darrell says. Having learnt nothing from last week’s near death experience with rape leaves Millie wolfs down a variety of strange things including what we think are some sort of oak apples . They appear to have no ill-effects on her though and she runs joyfully through the fields with ‘more sticks than you can shake a stick at’…

We return to the calm of the quarry and Millie decides to leave the camper without permission and runs round outside like a mad thing. We try not to laugh as we finally catch her and give her a stern talking to.

We have a most relaxing afternoon and then take a walk in the woods. At the woods edge we see a large fox crossing the fields, and he sees us and takes off at top speed. Millie catches his scent and tracks his passage through the grass. We walk downhill through fields full of sheep and lambs and studded with oak trees. A pair of buzzards wheel in the cloudy sky…
