“Gloucester Saturday”

Cathedral Window

Or Radio Two Toilets, Chips and Crypts and a Dead Rat…

No rosy fingered dawn this, just overwhelming darkness and the sound of ducks drowning in the torrential rain. We happily turn over and go back to sleep.

We hit the toilets and their piped Radio Two Muzak…

A lazy morning and a large brunch sets us up to tackle the day. We finally emerge in the late morning to a damp, grey world full of very, very loud ducks enjoying the puddles.

We head to Gloucester and then walk to the Cathedral. It is an airy, graceful building that originated in 678 with the foundation of an Abbey dedicated to Saint Peter. This was dissolved by Henry VIII.

The cloisters are the earliest surviving fan vaults having been designed between 1351 and 1377 by Thomas de Canterbury and they starred in the Harry Potter films.

We wander round the chantries and chapels.

We see the over-the-top canopied shrine of Edward II who was murdered at nearby Berkeley Castle and in a side chapel the monument in coloured bog oak of Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror.

We tag onto a crypt tour and, yes, I do smell incense in the Charnel House…

We leave the wonders of the Cathedral to visit the docks. We try to be impressed, we really do but on a dull November day it proves to be very hard, if not virtually impossible.

Gloucester doesn’t help much. In amongst beautiful medieval buildings tattoo parlours and burger bars fight for dominance. I treat Darrell to chips as he is starving (as usual) and tell him how lucky he is as he is getting chips and crypts all in a single trip.

We head back to Monty, a dead rat lies unremarked in the street…
